WAFFLES WITH ANABELLE

There’s nothing wrong with a little believing. Just ask Anabelle, the animated star of Anabelle’s Wish, or the real Anabelle, a partially blind Holstein calf who resides at a Temple rescue. Families can enjoy both Anabelles at a Dec. 20 fundraiser for Tiny Hooves Rescue & Petting Zoo, the local rescue that took in the blind calf earlier this month. Waffles with Annabelle will start at 9 a.m. at The Beltonian.

A TREE-MENDOUS YEAR

According to the Temple-based Texas Christmas Tree Growers Association, there are 175 Christmas tree farms in Texas producing some 200,000 trees annually on about 2,500 acres statewide.

HOLIDAY BAKING COSTS UP

Holiday baking will be more expensive this year as basics like milk, eggs, flour and sugar, as well as some popular sides, have all risen since last year, according to a Texas economist.

HIGHER CALF PRICES PROJECTED

Drought conditions in Texas and throughout the U.S. continue to take a toll on cattle numbers, with higher calf prices and less beef production projected for 2023, according to a Texas A&M AgriLife Extension Service livestock economist.

‘We’re having to get creative’

Temple rancher Andrew Tiner: “If you have six pastures with six stock tanks, but only one pond has water, you can only use one of the six pastures for cattle. It forces you to cut down on the size of your operation.”
