Family recipes still among favorites

According to a report released by Campbell’s Soup, stuffing is America’s favorite Thanksgiving side dish, followed closely by mashed potatoes, sweet potatoes, green bean casserole and macaroni and cheese. For the most part, those traditional favorites hold true right here in Central Texas. And for many Temple-area cooks, old family recipes still hold the key to Thanksgiving success.

Tiffany Zeitouni uses horse therapy to help soldiers combat PTSD, stress, depression and other mental ailments. But her customers aren’t the only ones who have battled adversity. The horses used in Tiffany’s Hoofbeats for Heroes programs are donated, and most have overcome physical and mental challenges themselves.

Belton names approved schools

The two newest Belton ISD elementary schools can now be referred to by their official names: James L. Burrell Elementary and Hubbard Branch Elementary. The Board of Trustees approved the names at its regular meeting on Monday.

Holiday baking will be more expensive this year as basics like milk, eggs, flour and sugar, as well as some popular sides, have all risen since last year, according to a Texas economist.

Texas hasn’t had deathless day on highways since Nov. 7, 2000

Texans have a lot to be proud of — great football, tasty barbecue, a diverse landscape and lots of friendly people — but unfortunately the state also has a streak that state and local officials hope ends very soon. Today marks 22 years — more than 8,030 days — since the last deathless day on Texas’ roads and highways, according to Jake Smith, a spokesman for TxDOT’s Waco division that includes a large chunk of Central Texas.

Bell County bell ringers hope to raise $175,000

Sleigh bells aren’t the only thing ringing this time of the year — The Salvation Army’s familiar Red Kettle Campaign is in full swing here in Bell County and bellringers are looking to bring in a big haul for those in need.

HIGHER CALF PRICES PROJECTED

Drought conditions in Texas and throughout the U.S. continue to take a toll on cattle numbers, with higher calf prices and less beef production projected for 2023, according to a Texas A&M AgriLife Extension Service livestock economist.

LAKE BELTON GETS 2.2 MILLION NEW BASS

Texas Parks & Wildlife is releasing millions of fish into Texas waters this year, including 2.2 million sunshine bass into Lake Belton and 123,165 channel catfish into Stillhouse Hollow. The department also stocked 352,563 rainbow trout into small lakes, ponds and streams, including healthy populations in several Temple and Belton waters.
