When you’re making your Christmas shopping list and checking twice, remember that the holiday season is a time for giving and sharing with family and friends, both human and furry.

Consider taking a little time to spread cheer to organizations dedicated to helping animals. There are several local shelters that need a helping hand during the holiday season, including the City of Temple and Bell County shelters.

While needs can vary from shelter to shelter, there are many items all need, and that list starts with food and money.

“Shelter can always use dry dog food of any brand, cat food and non-clumping cat litter,” said Amy Strunk, senior animal control officer for Temple. “We also need small blankets and cat toys.”

Cash donations are welcome and should be dropped off or mailed to the shelter at 620 Mama Dog Circle in Temple (76504).

The Bell County Animal Shelter also needs food and cleaning supplies, and it is located at 2509 S Loop 121 in Belton (76513).

Shelters always are in need of paper towels, cloth towels and pet wipes. Treats, toys, laundry detergent, new or gently used pet beds or pads and pet shampoo are always welcome.

Perhaps the best gift of all is your love, attention and time. Pet shelters welcome volunteers to assist with daily chores, as well as giving belly rubs and scratching behind the ears.

Another pet-supporting group is in need of monetary donations.

“I would like to mention the Greater Temple-Belton Foundation for Animal Care,” Strunk said. “This nonprofit organization works closely with the animal shelters (Temple and Bell County) and provides vaccination for our puppies, low-cost vouchers for our adopted pets and treatment for some of our shelter animals.”

“Not many people realize how much they do to help the animals in our community and they are always in need of monetary donations,” Strunk said.
